“I approach painting as an object, letting its surface, structure, and material presence shape the work.”

– Jean Alexander Frater

Jean Alexander Frater creates sculptural paintings that expand the language of the medium through folding, layering, and material transformation. Working at the intersection of painting, textile, and object, her practice reconsiders the canvas as a physical presence rather than a flat image, allowing each work to hold its own structure, rhythm, and voice.

Hidden Treasure

Jean Alexander Frater
Hidden Treasure, 2025
Acrylic on canvas
25 × 23 in

The Artwork

Hidden Treasure explores the visual richness that emerges when color is partially concealed, revealed, and reassembled. Working in green, yellow, and gold, Jean Alexander Frater builds a luminous abstract composition in which painted passages appear to move beneath and across the surface, creating a sense of discovery through layers of canvas and pigment.

Frater’s practice begins with painting but expands through physical transformation. Canvas is treated like fabric—cut, folded, layered, and manipulated so that its surface becomes a site of interruption and exchange. In Hidden Treasure, the title suggests the experience of finding something unexpected within the work: a warm flash of gold, a tucked-away field of yellow, or a subtle shift in texture revealed through the piece’s structure.

The painting balances order and improvisation. Its color relationships feel carefully composed, while the physical changes in the canvas preserve the intuitive, handmade energy of Frater’s process. Both intimate in scale and materially complex, Hidden Treasure offers a vivid example of her ability to turn abstract painting into an object of depth, movement, and surprise.

Paw
$2,400.00

Jean Alexander Frater
Paw, 2025
Acrylic on canvas
23 × 23 in

The Artwork

In Paw, Jean Alexander Frater brings together saturated pink, gold, and yellow in a compact sculptural painting that feels at once playful, tactile, and structurally alive. Rather than treating canvas as a passive surface, Frater manipulates it as material—folding, layering, cutting, and reconfiguring it to interrupt the expected flow of painted gesture.

The warm palette creates an immediate sense of energy, with flashes of gold and yellow moving through the pink ground like light caught within a shifting surface. Ripples, folds, and layered passages complicate the composition, allowing color to appear not only as an image but as something embedded in the work’s physical construction.

Paw embodies Frater’s distinctive approach to abstraction: intuitive and exuberant, yet grounded in a disciplined investigation of how painting can occupy space. The work invites close looking, rewarding the viewer with changing shadows, edges, and fragments of color that emerge from its constructed surface. Frater’s practice moves painting toward sculpture without abandoning the expressive pleasure of color.

Bamboo Grid Light Blue
$3,375.00

Jean Alexander Frater
Bamboo Grid Light Blue, 2021
Acrylic paint on canvas
30 × 30 in

The Artwork

Bamboo Grid Light Blue presents Jean Alexander Frater’s woven-canvas practice in a fresh, buoyant palette of light blue, pink, green, and beige. Built from hand-cut strips of painted canvas, the work transforms a traditional grid into a layered composition that feels soft, rhythmic, and quietly kinetic.

Light blue lends the painting an airy, open atmosphere, while pink and green introduce lively points of contrast. Beige brings the palette back to the material presence of canvas itself, reinforcing Frater’s interest in painting as a constructed object. As the strips overlap, the work gathers visual depth: colors meet, disappear, and reappear, while small shifts in relief create a changing play of light across the surface.

Frater’s woven paintings grow from an ongoing interest in the histories and assumptions of abstraction. She takes its recognizable vocabulary—repetition, stripes, color fields, and grids—and gives it a physical body. In Bamboo Grid Light Blue, geometry becomes less rigid and more responsive: a framework shaped by the hand, enlivened by touch, and continually altered by the viewer’s position in space.

Bamboo Grid Olive Green
$3,375.00

Jean Alexander Frater
Bamboo Grid Olive Green, 2022
Acrylic paint on canvas
30 × 30 in

The Artwork

In Bamboo Grid Olive Green, Jean Alexander Frater reconsiders the grid as something tactile, flexible, and in motion. Hand-cut strips of painted canvas overlap to create a rhythmic woven structure, transforming the familiar geometry of the grid into a richly dimensional field of intersections, shadows, and shifting color.

Olive green establishes the work’s grounding tone, while peach, blue, and light tan create moments of softness and visual lift. The palette carries a calm, organic sensibility, but Frater’s construction resists stillness: each overlapping strip changes the surface, making the composition feel both measured and responsive.

The Bamboo Grid series reveals a central tension in Frater’s work—between formal order and the expressive unpredictability of the hand. What may initially read as a geometric abstraction becomes, on closer inspection, a record of cutting, layering, and reassembly. The painting’s grid is not printed or mechanically repeated; it is built, touched, and subtly disrupted. In doing so, Frater invites viewers to experience the canvas as both image and object, structure and gesture.

Biography

Jean Alexander Frater’s practice explores the material possibilities of painting, bringing together histories, traditions, and conceptual frameworks through works that are both visceral and formally rigorous. By folding, layering, cutting, and manipulating canvas like fabric, she transforms gestural marks into disruptions of form and meaning, developing a visual language shaped by ripples, grids, gradients, and stripes. Her woven and folded works move between large-scale physical presence and more intimate studies in color and structure, continually testing the boundary between painting and sculpture.

Frater holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Dayton. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe, Images Festival in Toronto, Ben-Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, Kulturhuset in Stockholm, and Aspect/Ratio in Chicago. She is also the director of Material, a nonprofit artist project space in Chicago, extending her commitment to experimentation and dialogue within contemporary art.

“I am interested in painting as a site of physical and conceptual transformation, where the canvas can be folded, cut, and reconfigured to carry a presence beyond image. Through surface, structure, and gesture, I try to let the material itself generate new meaning.”
