Cut Through It All, 2025
Mixed media assemblage
7.5 × 3.5 × 2.25 in

The Artwork

Cut Through It All places a vintage magazine image of a large family vehicle alongside a cutout of a fishing reel, bringing two familiar objects into an unexpected relationship. Blocks of orange, light blue, and beige establish the composition, while black square outlines and a smaller blue section add graphic contrast. Within its narrow format, these elements create a concentrated interplay of image, color, and implied function.

The vehicle and reel suggest movement, travel, and the mechanisms of everyday life, yet their original uses give way to new visual associations. The outlined squares introduce a measured rhythm against the more descriptive imagery, allowing the work to move between abstraction and recognizable detail. A solid, carefully handcrafted frame gives the assemblage a substantial physical presence despite its intimate scale.

Premo’s collage and sculptural practice draws on collected objects as raw material, allowing familiar things to take on meanings beyond their original purpose. In Cut Through It All, that approach creates a compact construction in which imagery and geometry feel deliberately connected without resolving into a single story. The title adds another possibility: an invitation to look through the fragments toward the relationships that hold them together.

Biography

Mac Premo is a Brooklyn-based American artist known for mixed-media assemblage, sculptural collage, and installation. Using collected materials and found objects, Premo constructs works that shift ordinary things from utility into metaphor. Wood, imagery, text, hardware, and unexpected fragments become vehicles for humor, memory, visual rhythm, and narrative possibility.

Premo’s works occupy a space between abstraction and storytelling. Their precise, often playful constructions recall imaginary tools, incomplete machines, diagrammatic systems, and architectural models—yet they remain deeply human, shaped by the histories and emotional residue of their materials.

A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Premo has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at MoMA PS1, the Brooklyn Museum, the Ringling Museum, the New Museum, and The Invisible Dog Art Center.

“I am fascinated by the stories behind objects and by the way meaning shifts when something is removed from its original purpose and placed into a new context. My work is about that transformation—how found materials, memory, and structure can come together to create something unexpectedly resonant.”
