The Artwork

Standing nearly three feet tall, Doggo is a striking hybrid of human and canine forms rendered in a velvety, light-absorbing matte black finish. The sculpture carries Yamada’s signature handbuilt presence, where the raw, rhythmic energy of the artist's hands remains beautifully visible beneath the surface skin.

The figure's posture is a masterclass in playful body language: it sits heavily on its hindquarters with its back legs playfully stretched out in front, while its upper body props itself upright on straight, attentive front legs. Yamada strips away fine realism to focus entirely on pure silhouette and emotional volume. A small, perfectly rounded tail punctuates the reverse, while the face features a wide, whimsical, hand-carved smile that instantly transforms the imposing black mass into an endearing companion.

"In Doggo, Kensuke Yamada explores the cross-cultural universality of body language and companionship. By casting the figure in an unembellished matte black, the work acts as a three-dimensional canvas, shifting focus away from distracting details and toward the raw, psychological weight of posture.
