Brandon McKenzie
LS No. 255, 2025
Acrylic and graphite on canvas
36 × 36 in
Contemporary abstract painting

The Artwork

LS No. 255 is organized through a dynamic diagonal that cuts across an expansive light-grey field. Beginning near the right-center edge and moving toward the upper-left corner, the line introduces a sense of directional pull—an understated gesture that activates the otherwise open space above a dense black lower register.

The bottom third of the composition is anchored by a deep black field, establishing a strong contrast with the pale upper section. Rather than separating the canvas into fixed zones, McKenzie allows graphite marks and layered transitions to keep the relationship in motion. The diagonal functions as an interval between these tonal worlds, carrying the eye across the canvas while suggesting both structure and instability.

As with McKenzie’s broader LS series, the painting holds traces of its evolution. Its surfaces reflect the artist’s sustained attention to layering, removal, and the subtle evidence left behind by each revision. LS No. 255 feels simultaneously architectural and atmospheric—a composed study in weight, light, and movement.

Biography

Brandon McKenzie is a contemporary abstract painter who creates paintings that investigate rhythm, process, and restraint through pared-down compositions and a largely grayscale palette accented by graphite. Each work develops over time through repeated reworking, with every layer responding to the traces beneath it and reinforcing his belief that process is primary and product is secondary. Rooted in early studies of the geometric farmlands of western Kansas, McKenzie’s current series distills those landscapes into more open, spatial arrangements while preserving the tension between structure, gesture, addition, and erasure. By limiting color and emphasizing light, space, and layered surfaces, his paintings create a quiet balance between disorder and arrangement.

“My paintings evolve through a rhythm of layering and reduction, with each mark shaped by what came before it. The process leads the work forward through repetition, movement, and reaction, while my current series translates the geometry of the rural landscapes into something quieter and more open. I’m interested in how light, space, and essential form emerge from what remains.”
