Brandon McKenzie
LS No. 218, 2025
Acrylic and graphite on canvas
24 × 24 in
Contemporary abstract painting

The Artwork

In LS No. 218, a quiet light-grey field is interrupted by a broad horizontal band that moves across the center of the canvas. Beginning with a darker, more concentrated presence, the line gradually fades as it travels to the right, dissolving back into the surrounding grey. The effect is measured but expressive—a gesture made visible as it loses density, pressure, and certainty.

Graphite marks appear across the painting as delicate residues of movement. They do not describe an image so much as reveal the work’s internal rhythm: additions, adjustments, and partial erasures that remain active beneath the surface. McKenzie’s limited palette makes these tonal distinctions especially resonant, allowing the smallest shift from graphite blue to warm grey to carry visual weight.

LS No. 218 transforms a minimal arrangement into an atmospheric study of duration. The fading band suggests motion, distance, or a passing shadow, while the open surrounding field leaves space for the viewer’s own perception to complete the image.

Biography

Brandon McKenzie is a contemporary abstract painter who creates paintings that investigate rhythm, process, and restraint through pared-down compositions and a largely grayscale palette accented by graphite. Each work develops over time through repeated reworking, with every layer responding to the traces beneath it and reinforcing his belief that process is primary and product is secondary. Rooted in early studies of the geometric farmlands of western Kansas, McKenzie’s current series distills those landscapes into more open, spatial arrangements while preserving the tension between structure, gesture, addition, and erasure. By limiting color and emphasizing light, space, and layered surfaces, his paintings create a quiet balance between disorder and arrangement.

“My paintings evolve through a rhythm of layering and reduction, with each mark shaped by what came before it. The process leads the work forward through repetition, movement, and reaction, while my current series translates the geometry of the rural landscapes into something quieter and more open. I’m interested in how light, space, and essential form emerge from what remains.”
